Connect & Communicate Speech-Language Pathology Groups

Connect & Communicate groups target skills that help children, teens, and young adults to talk and listen, and to get along with family and friends. They help children and teens with autism and related social language difficulties. (No diagnosis is required.)

Does your child need help with specific skills? Connect & Communicate groups start with a one-on-one session to figure out what skills to target. Then we work on those specific skills in a group context! Young children with autism work on skills such as greetings, making comments and asking questions. They may also work on telling people about things they like, sharing information about their week, talking in small and large groups, and being friendly! Teens with autism may work on taking turns talking and listening, sharing feelings, giving specific answers to questions and self-advocacy. Older teens and young adults set their own goals for communication. Then they learn to find support to meet their goals, and how to evaluate their progress. Every group is different – each one is designed specifically for its participants.

Children love Connect & Communicate groups! They have so much fun that they don’t feel like they’re working on crucial skills! Parents love them because they celebrate participants’ strengths and interests, which helps them quickly learn the skills they need.

We always use direct teaching and visual support, but we don’t stop there. There is tons of practice in fun activities so that the participants don’t just learn what to do, they actually learn to do it! Volunteers provide support alongside the Speech-Language Pathologist so that we can target each participant’s needs. The groups are limited to 6 participants, which allows for lots of practice and tons of fun!

Participants may have Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger Syndrome, but they do not need a diagnosis to participate.
